The ParishThe parish of Monks Risborough lies in west central Buckinghamshire at the foot of the Chiltern Hills. Monks Risborough is located about 6 miles south of the town of Aylesbury and sits on the A4010 road which connects Aylesbury through to High Wycombe. Monks Risborough has, in recent times, expanded to become contiguous with its neighbour Princes Risborough but was once a discrete settlement gathered around its church. Modern developments have reached this area, the Aylesbury to London rail line passes through giving Monks Risborough a station and thus a commuter growth from the capital. Like many parishes along the springline of the Chilterns Monks Risborough parish was extended on a northwest to southeastern axis to encompass a range of landscape from the vale of Oxford through to the Chiltern heights; the purpose was to grant each settlement a share in the farming opportunities. A number of small streams trend northwestwards to drain the parish into the Thame, this in turn joins the Thames and flows through the capital to the North Sea. Monks Risborough is sited at around 110 metres above the sea but the chalk escarpment of the Chilterns rises immediately to its east and reaches heights of almost 250 metres within a mile of the village. Monks Risborough parish was fairly typically sized for a parish in this area, covering almost 2,900 acres it would have supported a population of nearly 1,100 parishioners. In Domesday times Monks Risborough was a possession of the Archbishop of Canterbury, a substantial settlement even then it could offer 14 ploughs as well as meadows and woodland. |
