The ParishThe parish of Aston Sandford lies in western central Buckinghamshire, indeed it forms a tiny part of the border with neighbouring Oxfordshire. Aston Sandford is a small hamlet, little more than an offshoot of larger neighbor Haddenham and lies about 3 miles northeast of the Oxfordshire market town of Thame. Aston Sandford sits on a junction of a small lane which curves northwards from the A4129 road which links Thame with Princes Risborough. There is not much to the village, just a small gathering of farms and cottages around the church, there is indication that this may have been a "closed" parish which never developed into a normal village as a result. The land is dominated today by arable agriculture and stands on the low lying Oxfordshire Vale below the ridge of the Chilterns which lie a few miles away to the east. In the past the heavy clay soils would have lent themselves more to pastoral farming. The parish is drained by a number of small tributaries of the River Thame, these flow westwards to join the main river at Thame and thence eventually reach the Thames itself at Dorchester on Thames. Aston Sandford is sited at around 70 metres above the sea and much of the land is almost flat at that height for a few miles around. By Buckinghamshire standards Aston Sandford was a small parish, covering barely 670 acres it supported just under 90 parishioners. In Domesday times Aston Sandford was shared three ways, although the majority shares were held by one Mainou the Breton & Bishop Odo of Bayeux, the parish was more prosperous at that time supporting 10 ploughs as well as having some meadows. |
