The ParishThe parish of Steeple Morden lies in the extreme southwest of Cambridgeshire, indeed it forms part of the border with neighbouring Hertfordshire and is only a a mile or so from neighbouring Bedfordshire. Steeple Morden is located about 5 miles northwest of the Hertfordshire market town of Royston. Steeple Morden is small and compact village sitting on a broad lane about 3 miles north of the busy A505 road which connects Royston with Baldock. The area around is underlain with chalk, albeit here lying almost horizontally giving a plateau-like appearance rather than the deeply rolling countryside further south. The rich limey soils, however, would have made arable agriculture the mainstay of the local economy at the time of this transcript. Steeple Morden is drained northeastwards by a small tributary of the River Cam (Cheney Water) which it joins after a few miles, the latter makes its way through Cambridge to The Wash via the Great Ouse. Steeple Morden is sited at around 40 metres above the sea and land hereabouts sits at or close to that level for some distance. Like many parishes in south Cambridgeshire Steeple Morden parish is elongated on a north/south axis to take a share of different soil types, it was of a fairly typical size for the area, covering just under 4,000 acres (quite large for a southern parish) it would have supported a population of around 800 parishioners. In Domesday times Steeple Morden was shared 3 ways, the majority in the hands of the Bishop of Winchester there were smaller holdings for Earl Roger of Shrewsbury and Hardwin of Scales. Steeple Morden could offer 20 ploughs, some meadow and 5 mills. |
