Taxal St James

 

The Parish

The parish of Taxal lies in the extreme east of Cheshire, it formed a considerable portion of the border with neighbouring Derbyshire, however following reorganisation of the counties in 1974 Taxal is now within Derbyshire. Taxal is an extensive upland parish which contains the significant settlement of Whaley Bridge as well as the small village of taxal. Taxal village is located about 4 miles west of the Derbyshire town of Chapel-en-le-Frith and sits just to the west of the A5004 which connects Whaley Bridge with the Derbyshire town of Buxton. Taxal parish was thin in an east to west direction but extensively north to south running all the way to the moorlands around Three Shire Heads. The parish contained extensive coal mines notably at Whaley Bridge and other industries included a bleaching mill and a wire mill as well as quarrying for the local building stone, pastoral farming was the other significant component of the parish economy. Taxal is drained by the River Goyt, which formerly marked the county border, which heads northwards to join the Mersey and reach the Irish Sea through the port of Liverpool. Taxal village is sited at around 210 metres above the sea but this is an upland parish and local heights rise nearby to over 500 metres notably around the Cat & Fiddle Inn on the A537. Taxal parish was extensive as are many in the Peak District, it covered over 4,900 acres and would have supported a population of around 700 parishioners. There is no mention of Taxal in Domesday Book.


The Church

St James' church (formerly dedicated to St Leonard) sits in the small village of Taxal on the eastern side of a narrow lane, Linglongs Road. Sadly little remains of the original church, the western tower being the earliest piece remaining is from the 16th century topped by 17th century pinnacles. All of the remainder of the church was rebuilt in 1825 and the whole was fully restored in 1889 when the chancel was enlarged. Essentially, therefore, an Edwardian/Victorian church. The lane beside the church is rather narrow so parking is limited, the church sits within a low local stone wall with its western tower almost flush with the same. The churchyard is rather small making it difficult to get sufficient distance to adequately capture the building in photographs.
