The ParishThe parish of Creed, together with its larger neighbour Grampound, lies in south-central Cornwall about midway between the town of St Austell and the city of Truro; Creed is roughly 8 miles southwest of St Austell and 9 northeast of Truro. Although Creed bears the parish name it is very much the smaller settlement, a mere hamlet, whereas Grampound, sitting astride the A390 road which connects St Austell with Truro, is a large bustling village. Whilst Cornwall is noted for its extractive industries Creed & Grampound are agricultural and in particular pastoral in their economy. They sit on the eastern banks of the Upper Fal river and would have exploited the pastures of that river's floodplain as well as the rolling hillsides around. The Fal drains the parish southwestwards to meet many more such rivers in the flooded ria of Falmouth Roads leading to the English channel. Creed is sited at around 30 metres above the sea, whilst Grampound is built on rising ground east of the A380's crossing of the Fal, the river being at 20 metres and the higher parts of the village over 40 metres; local heights rise within a short distance to around 100 metres. Creed parish was rather mid-sized for the area which contains either large or quite small parishes, it covered almost 2,500 acres and would have supported a population of around 750 parishioners. In Domesday times Creed is not specifically mentioned but is reported within the return of nearby Tybesta, a holding of Count Robert of Mortain. Collectively Tybesta could offer 13 ploughs together with pastures and woodland. |
