The ParishThe parish of East Buckland is located in northern Devon about 5 miles northwest of the market town of South Molton. East Buckland is a small and reasonably compact village lying in lanes just over a mile north of the A361 road which connects South Molton with Barnstaple. East Buckland would have largely earned its income from pastoral farming and today little has changed with the deeply incised landscape dominated by small fields of pasture. East Buckland is drained by a small tributary of the River Bray which is soon joined and heads onwards south, the Bray meets the Mole then the Taw, reversing direction to reach the Irish Sea through the port of Barnstaple. East Buckland is sited at around 170 metres above the sea, in a shallow side valley of the Bray which lies some 50 metres lower; local heights in this deeply rolling countryside rise to almost 250 metres within a mile or two. East Buckland parish is rather small by Devon standards, covering just under 1,400 acres it would have supported a population of around 150 parishioners. In Domesday times East Buckland was held by Bishop Geoffrey of Coutances and could offer just 4 ploughs as well as small meadows, pastures & woodland. |
