The ParishThe parish of Stoke Rivers lies in northern Devon quite close to its border with neighbouring Somerset. Stoke Rivers is a compact village about 5 miles northeast of the port and town of Barnstaple. Stoke Rivers lies in lanes several miles from any major road, the closest being the A399 which runs about 3 miles away to the east and which connects South Molton with Combe Martin. The area around the village is largely dominated by pastoral farming in small fields. Stoke Rivers lies in an elevated position on a prominent ridge descending from nearby Exmoor, it is largely built around its main junction of lanes. The area is drained by deeply incised valleys carrying tributaries of the River Yeo, these head southwestwards to enter the Irish Sea through the port of Barnstaple. Stoke Rivers is sited at around 210 metres above the sea, high above its neighbouring valleys which are cut in by 120 metres, the landscape being extremely undulating hereabouts. By the standards of North Devon Stoke Rivers parish was on the small side, it covered around 2,300 acres and supported a population of around 300 parishioners. In Domesday times Stoke Rivers was held by one William of Poilley, it was small then too having just 5 ploughs and some woodland and pasture. |
