The ParishThe parish of Buckland Filleigh lies in western Devon about 8 miles northeast of the small market town of Holsworthy. There is very little to modern day Buckland Filleigh little more than a hamlet which sits within a large area devoid of major roads, the closest A road sits just over three miles south and is the A3072 connecting Holsworthy with Hatherleigh. Buckland Filleigh would have largely been an estate parish with most folk working in support of the single local landowner, being Devon pastoral farming would have predominated. Much of the parish is, today, wooded with Upcott Wood occupying much of the acreage. Buckland Filleigh is drained southwards by the Mussel Brook which runs to join the Torridge before turning back northwards to reach the outer Bristol Channel through the port of Bideford & the joint estuary of Taw & Torridge. Buckland Filleigh is sited at around 150 metres above the sea and sits on something of a ridge with land only rising gently northward to close to 170 metres. Buckland Filleigh parish was fairly typically sized for its area, covering close to 1,000 acres it would have supported a population of just under 300 parishioners. In Domesday times Buckland Filleigh was a a holding of Bishop Geoffrey of Coutances and was a relatively modest place even then, offering 7 ploughs and small meadows, pastures & woodland. |

1 | 9th May 1754 - 27th October 1811 | North Devon Record Office - Reference - 1096A/PR/1/3 | Standard preprinted and self-numbered Marriage register with 4 entries per page | Grade 4 Register - there are notable quality issues with this register which may have resulted in many misreads | This register has suffered damage over the years showing greying of the edges of pages and missing portions of the pages, fortunately a good series of Bishop's Transcripts has restored most of the missing data. |
2 | 30th January 1813 - 20th September 1836 | North Devon Record Office - Reference - 1096A/PR/1/4 | Standard Rose style preprinted and prenumbered Marriage register | Grade 3 Register - there are sufficient quality issues with this register to indicate that some misreads will occur albeit few in number | This register too has suffered from water damage which has resulted in staining of the spine into the entry blocks. Whilst this is insufficient to make the register unreadable it does result in the loss of date detail for one entry, the remainder were trying but readable. |
