The ParishThe parish of Sheepwash lies in northwestern Devon about 4 miles west of the large village of Hatherleigh. Sheepwash is a small and compact village sitting on a hill overlooking the River Torridge. Sheepwash sits, in lanes, about 2 miles north of the A30-72 road which links Hatherleigh to Holsworthy. The area is fairly undulating with the Torridge set deep into its valley, the area would have had a mixed farming regime at the time of this transcript; both pastoral and arable farming were commonplace, nowadays pastures tend to dominate. The Torridge drains the parish eastwards before turning to the north and reaching the Irish Sea through the port of Bideford. Sheepwash is sited at around 100 metres above the sea, some 40 metres above the river which is a quarter mile to the south. Sheepwash parish was smaller than most of its neighbours, it covered almost 1,8000 acres and would have supported a population of around 500 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Sheepwash in Domesday Book. |

1 | 17th April 1754 - 6th April 1812 | North Devon Record Office - Reference - 2940A/PR/1/4 | Standard preprinted and self-numbered combined Banns & Marriage register with 3 entries per page | Grade 4 Register - there are notable quality issues with this register which may have resulted in many misreads | This register has come to some harm over the years, the first portion has ragged edges and is deformed. The period is not helped by the use of an unusual format for recording entries during the same period leading to a likelihood of some misreads |
