The ParishThe parish of Easington lies in eastern County Durham bordering the North Sea coast of the county. Easington lies about 8 miles east of the county capital Durham just east of the busy A19 road which forms the main route along the east coast of the county. Easington village is about 2 miles inland from the North Sea coast. The area is mining country and in the past small settlements grew up all across Easington parish to service various collieries. These settlements coalesced into the three main pits of Easington, Blackhall and Shotton collieries. Nowadays the pits have closed and there is something of a postindustrial feel to this coast, a mixed blessing as there has been much unemployment but at least the area is now cleaner and the coast returning to a more natural state. Easington is sited at around 130 metres above sea level and steeply sided "denes" descend to the coast which is fringed with 50 metre cliffs. The parish was extensive, as befits a northern one, but not divided into chapelries like many such parishes. The population rose dramatically during the period of this transcript ending with almost 1,100 parishioners. In common with much of northern Britain there is no mention of Easington in Domesday Book. |
