The ParishThe parish of Downham lies in southern Essex about 3 miles east of the new town of Billericay in the valley of the River Crouch. Downham is about two miles north of the A129 which connects Billericay to Wickford and about a mile south of the modern reservoir at Hanningfield. The village is built along a lane on top of a low rise at about 70 metres above sea level which is a high spot for this area of Essex. The parish is largely arable farmland with patches of market gardening. The parish is a relatively small one of 2,200 acres with a population of around 250 parishioners. Whilst there is some evidence for Roman settlement in the area Downham is not separately mentioned in Domesday Book. |
