The ParishThe parish of East Hanningfield lies in southern central Essex roughly 6 miles southeast of the town of Chelmsford. East Hanningfield is a mid-sized and compact village which sits just under 2 miles east of the A130 road which links Chelmsford with Rayleigh & Wickford. Most of East Hanningfield lies between a forking junction to the north and a crossroads to the south both joined by the main lane, The Tye. Prior to medieval times this was a largely forested area with stiff heavy clays soils resisting agriculture, with modern equipment the forests were cleared and arable farming now dominates the landscape. Drainage through the area has been interrupted by the construction of Hanningfield Reservoir which has formed a major water resource and also a wildfowl sanctuary to the west of the A130. Most drainage follows straggling watercourses generally trending to the Chelmer and thence the North Sea through the port of Maldon. East Hanningfield is sited at around 60 metres above the sea in gentle terrain where land rises little more than a further 10 metres for some distance. East Hanningfield parish was fairly typically sized for its area, covering just over 2,300 acres it would have supported a population of close to 450 parishioners. East Hanningfield is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book. |
