The ParishThe parish of West Hanningfield lies in south central Essex about 4 miles north of the market town of Wickford. West Hanningfield is a small and rather linear village which sits just over a mile west of the A130 road which connects Wickford with Chelmsford. West Hanningfield properties stretch for well over a half mile along an east to west running lane with a noticeable concentration at the western end. It is difficult to avoid the modern development which dominates the village, the vast earthen bank of Hanningfield reservoir standing immediately south of the village. The reservoir is reputedly the 11th largest in England and was created in 1957, as well as providing a source of regular water is has been adopted b nature and is nowadays an important wintering ground for duck and other wildfowl. Before the drowning of much of the parish West Hanningfield would have been dominated by arable farming, the shallow valley in which it sits would have allowed diversification by provided valley floor grazing too, West Hanningfield is drained northwards by small streams to reach the Chelmer close to Chelmsford, from there things turn eastward to reach the North Sea through the Blackwater Estuary. West Hanningfield is sited at around 60 metres above the sea in gentle terrain wher local heights rise westwards to reach almost 100 metres to the west of West Hanningfield Hall. West Hanningfield parish was fairly typically sized for this area of its county, covering just under 2,800 acres it would have supported a population of just above 500 parishioners. West Hanningfield is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book. |
