The ParishThe parish of Great Maplestead lies in northern Essex about 2 miles north of the market town of Hadleigh. The parish lies in a network of small lanes to the west of the busy A131 which links Braintree and the Suffolk border town of Sudbury. Great Maplestead lies at around 70 metres above sea level above the east bank of a small tributary of the River Colne which drains through Colchester to the North Sea. It has been speculated that its name arose as a result of a concentration of Maple trees in the area. Great Maplestead is a compact village lining a narrow north-south running lane down to the crossing of the brook. The area is intensively arable farming with large fields of cereal mixed with sugar beet and oil seed. The parish is compact and of around 2,000 acres it supported around 450 parishioners during the period of this transcript. Great Maplestead has been around for a long time, in conjunction with its neighbour Little Maplestead it merits no fewer than 3 mentions in Domesday Book were the combination boasted 5 ploughs. |
