The ParishThe parish of Little Maplestead lies in north-central Essex not too far from its border with neighbouring Suffolk. Little Maplestead is located about 3 miles north of the small market town of Halstead. Little Maplestead sits a half mile west of the A131 road which connects Halstead with Sudbury in Suffolk. There is not much to Little Maplestead no compact village as such just a grouping of cottages and farms loosely around the Hall & church. Little Maplestead's history is unusual in that the village was granted to the Knights Hospitallers in 1185 who sited a preceptory here. The village would, otherwise, have largely earned its living from arable farming and that practice still dominated today Little Maplestead is drained westwards by small feeder streams of the River Colne, from reaching that river the flow heads southeastwards to reach the North Sea through the port of Colchester. Little Maplestead is sited at around 80 metres above the sea and land is gently undulating for many miles at or near to that height. Little Maplestead parish was small but then many in Essex are so, it covered almost 1,100 acres and would have supported a population of around 400 parishioners. In Domesday times Little Maplestead was, indeed a small place. Despite this two landowners shared the parish, the greater part in the hands of John son of Wateran with a small portion with Aubrey de Vere's wife (an unusual instance of a woman as landowner at that time). The parish could offer a single plough, small meadows and woodland but did possess a mill. |
