The ParishThe parish of Little Parndon lies in the extreme west of Essex indeed it forms part of the border with neighbouring Hertfordshire. Little Parndon is located about 2 1/2 miles west of the former market town of Harlow. Little Parndon sits on the eastern banks of the River Stort which here forms the border with Hertfordshire and on the A1169 road which forms the perimeter of what has become the mini-metropolis of Harlow New Town. Once a tiny riverside hamlet grouped around the church and the bridge over the Stort, Little Parndon has been developed with large modern housing estates contiguous with the expanse of the New Town which covers an width of 5 miles from east (by the M11) to west. Other modern developments include the London to Cambridge rail line which passes through the parish. At the time of this transcript Little Parndon would have been a sleepy rural arable settlement. The Stort drains the parish southwards, joining the Lea and eventually the start of the Thames Estuary and thence to the North Sea. Little Parndon is sited at around 40 metres above the sea, it's valley setting being some 20 to 40 metres above the local height levels in gentle countryside. Little Parndon parish was one of the smallest by acreage in Essex, it covered just over 500 acres and would have supported a population of fewer than 100 parishioners. In Domesday times Little Parndon was returned as part of a greater whole with Great Parndon, shared between 4 landholders collectively they offered 8 ploughs as well as small meadows & woodlands. |
