The ParishThe parish of Stapleford Abbotts lies in southwestern Essex nit too far from its border with neighbouring Middlesex. Stapleford Abbotts is located about 6 miles southeast of the town of Epping and about 4 north of the town of Romford. Stapleford Abbotts is a rather dispersed village spread over a length of over 2 miles along the B175 road which connects Romford with the A113 at Passingford Bridge. Modern communications pass through the parish, the modern M25 skirting the northeastern corner of Stapleford Abbotts parish. Much of the area was arable at the time of this transcript and today, unusually for a place inside the M25 little has changed, a scatter of newer commuter developments has arrived but growth has been hindered by a lack of a rail line to the capital. Stapleford Abbotts is drained by small tributaries of the River Roding which head off northwards to soon join that river and reverse direction, reaching the Thames Estuary through Barking Creek. Stapleford Abbotts is sited at around 60 - 70 metres above the sea in gently undulating terrain. Stapleford Abbotts parish was fairly typically sized for its county, it covered just under 2,400 acres and would have supported a population of around 500 parishioners. In Domesday times much of Stapleford Abbotts was held by Bury St Edmunds Abbey with a small portion in the hands of one Robert Gernon, the parish could, collectively, offer just 5 ploughs as well as meadows and woodland populated by a large number of pigs. |
