The ParishThe parish of Stapleford Tawney lies in southwestern Essex about 6 miles southeast of the town of Epping. Stapleford Tawney is located on a narrow lane that heads northwards from the A113 road that links Chipping Ongar with Woodford, this lane branches off just north of where that road crosses the M25, London's Orbital Motorway. There is really very little to Stapleford Tawney merely a scatter of cottages and farms along and about that lane, the presence of the Great Hall is probably indicative of the church's role in what was probably a closed parish. The area today is almost totally devoted to arable agriculture and that would have dominated at the time of this transcript too. Stapleford Tawney sits on a low ridge of land with small streams flowing south to both west and east, it is sited at roughly 60 metres above sea level and the ridge rises higher to the north. The streams are small tributaries of the River Roding which flows westwards and then south to eventually reach the River Thames in eastern Greater London. By Essex standards Stapleford Tawney parish was quite small at just over 1,500 acres and it supported around 350 parishioners. In Domesday times Stapleford Tawney was held by one Siric, the books doesn't specify the ploughs held but does document meadows, woodland and a mill. |
