The ParishThe county of Flintshire is unusual, in its ancient boundaries, in having a southern detached portion separated an arm of Denbighshire from the remainder, Overton sits within that detached portion and forms part of the border with both Denbighshire and also Shropshire and thus part of the Wales/England border. Overton is located on the eastern banks of the River Dee about 4 miles east of the Denbighshire market town of Ruabon and sits on the A539 road which connects Ruabon with Whitchurch in Shropshire. Once a market town Overton's status has declined over the years as those other towns have grown and today is just a large village. Overton is built on the outside of a broad meander of the Dee, on top of the resulting river cliff and some 40 metres higher than the river below. The area would primarily have been a pastoral farming area and today little has changed albeit more arable occurs through the use of heavy machinery on the land. The Dee drains the parish northwards running through the city of Chester before meeting the Irish Sea. Overton is sited at around 60 metres above the sea and, east of the Dee, this is something of a local high point, land rises westwards towards the distant Clwyd Hills, but does not exceed 100 metres within a couple of miles. Flintshire parishes are fairly large and Overton parish was no exception, covering close to 6,000 acres it would have supported a population of around 1,700 parishioners. Like most of Wales Overton is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book, albeit it is often confused with the Cheshire Overton in the hands of Robert the son of Hugh, that place being north of Malpas in Cheshire. |
