Michaelston Super Ely St Michael

The Parish

The parish of Michaelston Super Ely lies in southeastern Glamorgan about 5 miles west of the city of Cardiff. Once a distinct & separate small village Michaelston Super Ely is now almost absorbed by the nearby city as it spreads westwards, suburbs lie close by the village centre. Michaelston Super Ely sits, in lanes, about a mile north of the route of the A48 road which connects Cardiff with Swansea, Cardiff's western by-pass, the A4232, sweeps close to the west of the former village whilst the main rail line to the west passes close to the north. At the time of this transcript Michaelston Super Ely was little more than a farming hamlet earning its living from pastoral farming. The parish sits on the southern banks of the Afon Elai which drains eastwards to reach the Bristol Channel through the much-developed Cardiff Bay. Michaelston Super Ely is sited at around 30 metres above the sea, by the church, rising to almost 50 metres at the main crossroads; as part of the coastal plain land is gently undulating with local heights reaching little more altitude. Michaelston Super Ely parish was tiny by Glamorgan standards, it covered barely 300 acres and would have held a population of around 50 parishioners. In common with most of Wales there is no specific mention of Michaelston Super Ely in Domesday Book which did not cover this area.

The Church

St Michael's church sits at the western end of the dead-end lane, Persondy Lane; with a couple of large houses for company there is parking before the church gates. Before Pevsner is drawn on dating the building he laments the extensive restoration of the 1860s. Whilst he acknowledges that it "makes the building more visually attractive" it hampers all dating evidence. Despite these difficulties he points our Norman features in the form of herringbone masonry in the northern wall of the nave and 14th century Early English Gothic style southern doorway and lancet windows, also in the nave. The chancel is largely 19th century but retains traces of its 12th century chancel arch. Persondy Lane ends at a turning bay with church parking, the site is guarded by a wall of dense trees through which a tarred path rises to metal gates. Despite trees hemming in on all quarters there are sufficient views to adequately photograph the church.
