The ParishThe parish of Ampney Crucis lies in southeastern Gloucestershire not too far from its border with neighbouring Wiltshire. Ampney Crucis is located about 3 miles east of the town of Cirencester. Ampney Crucis is a medium sized and rather dispersed village sited just on and north of the A417 road which connects Cirencester with Fairford; most of the village sits along a lane running parallel with and a half mile north of the A417. Ampney Crucis would have had a more diverse economy than many such villages, agriculture, in particular pastoral farming, would have dominated but employment could also be found in quarrying the local honey-coloured limestone for building work. Ampney Crucis is drained to the southeast by the Ampney Brook which soon joins the infant Thames before making its way to the North Sea through the capital and the Thames Estuary. Ampney Crucis is sited at around 110 metres above the sea, the landscape being gently rolling to local heights some 20 metres higher. Ampney Crucis parish was of a fairly typical size for this portion of Gloucestershire, it covered just under 3,100 acres and would have supported a population of almost 600 parishioners, a curiosity of the parish are two detached areas which lie within Ampney St Mary parish. In Domesday times Ampney Crucis was held by three gentlemen named Turstin, Humphrey & Baldwin; the parish could offer 15 ploughs, a small meadow and a mill. |
