The ParishThe parish of Bromesberrow (also rendered as Bromsberrow) lies in the extreme northwest of Gloucestershire, indeed it forms part of the border not only with neighbouring Herefordshire but also that with neighbouring Worcestershire. Bromesberrow lies about 5 miles southeast of the Herefordshire market town of Ledbury it is a somewhat scattered settlement with separate settlements at Brown End and Bromesberrow Heath. Bromesberrow sits either side of the A417 road which connects Ledbury to Gloucester, the modern M50 cuts through the southern part of parish passing within a few hundred yards of Bromesberrow Heath. Bromesberrow sits on a low lying plain just to the south of the most southern extension of the Malvern Hills which run to the north from here. The area would mainly have been dominated by a mixed farming regime although with modern machinery more arable is present today. Bromesberrow is drained to the southeast by the Glynch Brook, a tributary of the River Gleadon which meets the Severn at Gloucester before exiting via the Bristol Channel. Bromesberrow is sited at around 50 metres above sea level although to its north the land rises steeply to 191 metres at the top of Chase End Hill, the final flourish of the Malverns. Bromesberrow parish is relatively small for this part of Britain, covering 1,800 acres it would have supported around 280 parishioners. In Domesday times Bromesberrow was held by one Ralph of Tosny and could boast 15 ploughs as well as small woodlands. |
