The ParishThe parish of Cheriton lies in central Hampshire about 6 miles east of the city of Winchester. The village is a compact settlement sited along the B3046 which runs northwards from the A272 road which connects Winchester to Petersfield. Cheriton is an attractive "chocolate-box" village of cottages running along the bottom of a shallow valley with a clear chalk stream running down one side of the road, the stream drains northwards to join the River Itchen. The valley is a popular one with walker, both the Wayfarer's Walk and Itchen Way utilise its footpaths and pass through Cheriton. The village is set in rolling downland at about 70 metres above sea level but land rises to east and west to above 100 metres. The parish had its moment in history during the English Civil War when a battle took place about a mile northeast of the village in 1644 between Roundheads and Cavaliers which was a victory of sorts for the Parliamentarians. Cheriton parish, like many in this area, is strongly elongated northeast to southwest - presumably to equitably share land types between the areas communities. Cheriton parish was quite large for a southern parish, almost 3,00 acres, and supported a healthy population at a little over 700 parishioners. Strangely Cheriton is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book. |
