The ParishThe parish of Egerton lies in Central Kent about 6 miles northwest of the market town of Ashford. Egerton is a compact village built in lanes about 2 miles south of the A20 & M20 corridor. Egerton sits on a low hill, the Greensand Ridge, which meanders across Kent from West to East. Egerton largely consists of two main streets, that running southwest to northeast bearing the simple name "The Street" and another joining at right angles and heading southeastwards. Most properties are grouped around the junction where Egerton has many facilities of a village remaining including shops and inn. Egerton is sited at around 100 metres above sea level and the ridge overlooks the valley of the River Great Stour to the north, this river forms the main drainage of the parish and is heading for Ashford, Canterbury and the North Sea through Sandwich. Egerton parish is of a typical size for a Kent parish, it covered almost 2,800 acres and would have supported a dense population of almost 900 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Egerton in Domesday Book. |
