Hollinwood St Margaret

The Parish

The parish of Hollinwood was created in 1835 from the large Lancashire parish of Oldham, before that the area was a chapelry unlicensed for marriages. Hollinwood is located in southeastern Lancashire quite close to its borders with both neighbouring Yorkshire and also Derbyshire. Hollinwood is about 2 miles southwest of the centre of its mother parish, Oldham sitting astride the A62 road which connects Oldham with the city of Manchester. The area is intensively urban today with a wide area of conurbation joining the two cities and very few open country areas separating the individual towns from the city of Manchester. Hollinwood, previously a small village grew substantially through the 18th and 19th centuries and thereby merited its own church. Hollinwood is drained to the southwest by the Moston Brook, which joins the River Irwell before reaching the Irish Sea through the Mersey Estuary. Hollinwood is sited at around 130 metres above sea level, the Pennine range rises some few miles to the east. Hollinwood was not separately enumerated with respect to acreage and population from its mother parish. There is no specific mention of Hollinwood in Domesday Book.

The Church

St Margaret's church sits on the northern side of Chapel Road which leads southeastwards off the busy dual carriageway of the A62. The present church was built in 1880 to replace the earlier church which supported the chapelry (built 1766 - 1769). The church merits little comment by Pevsner and is typically Victorian in style, the only feature meriting comment is the northwestern tower which is actually of 1906 rather than the same date as the rest of the building. The building sits behind a low wall topped by rather ornate Victorian railings, a metal gated entry gives access up some curving steps to the churchyard. The western end of the building is best appreciated from outside the grounds and the site is rather dominated by trees which rather restrict the angles available for photography.
