The ParishThe parish of Walton on the Hill lies in southwestern Lancashire close to the River Mersey and now part of the great port city of Liverpool. Walton on the Hill is an ancient parish; it predates any of the Liverpool parishes and was the parish for a wide area prior to the growth of the port. Walton on the Hill is sited northeast of the city of Liverpool and covers an area an area on the rise above the immediate vicinity of the River Mersey. The parish stands about 40 metres above sea level quite a height considering the sea is only 2 miles away. Following Liverpool's growth Walton on the Hill became a desirable suburb for the wealthy but as the city's tentacles have spread the parish now is barely beyond the main city and indeed is largely contiguous with Liverpool. The ancient parish of Walton on the Hill covered over 22,000 acres making it a very large one and it also supported a large population of almost 38,000 parishioners. Like most of this area Walton on the Hill is not mentioned in Domesday Book as this volume did not cover the area. |
