The ParishThe parish of Newbold verdon lies in western Leicestershire about 7 miles west of the city of Leicester. Newbold Verdon is a large village which sits on the B582 road which connects it through to Leicester's southern suburbs at Enderby & Whetstone. Most of the properties in the village lie to the south of the B582 and recent growth has expanded what was once a small village into a substantial village with most amenities remaining in situ. This area of the county would have been dominated by pastoral farming and Newbold Verdon had its share, recent developments have increased the percentage of arable despite the heavy soils. Newbold Verdon is drained eastwards by the headwaters of the Rothley Brook which joins the Soar midway between Leicester & Loughborough, here matters turn north to join the Trent and thence to the North Sea through the Humber Estuary. Newbold Verdon is sited at around 130 metres above the sea in gently undulating terrain, heights generally are little higher for some distance. Newbold Verdon parish was fairly typically sized for this area, covering around 2,400 acres it would have supported a population of just under 700 parishioners. In Domesday times Newbold Verdon was a tiny place, held by Hugh de Grandmesnil it could offer just a pair of ploughs and was in the smallest 20% of settlements recorded in that book. |

1 | 29th March 1754 - 23rd December 1806 | Leicestershire & Rutland Record Office - Reference - DE750/3 | Plain, unruled book, a continuation of the extant composite register in contravention of Hardwicke's segregation & wording requirements | Grade 3 Register - there are sufficient quality issues with this register to indicate that some misreads will occur albeit few in number | The arrangement of entries is complex and identifying where a marriage occurs is not always readily apparent. There is, thus, a possibility of accidental omission |
