The ParishThe parish of East Allington lies in the extreme southwest of Lincolnshire, close to the point where the county meets Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. East Allington & its larger neighbour West Allington today form the village of, simply, Allington which sits roughly 5 miles northwest of the market town of Grantham. The twin parishes were united in 1872. Allington is located midway between the A52 (2 miles north of this road) and the A1 Great North Road (two miles south of that) with West Allington forming the border with Leicestershire. Allington sits upon the clay-rich soils of the Jurassic muds below the limestone escarpment that forms the spine of Lincolnshire, these harder soils would have supported a more mixed farming regime than today's vast arable prairies that dominate nowadays. Allington is drained northwards by the Foston Beck which soon reaches the River Witham, continuing through Lincoln before turning back southeast to reach the North Sea through the port of Boston. Allington is sited at around 40 metres above the sea, immediately around the village land is gentle but to the east the limestone rises sharply to 110 metres on the outlier of Great Gonerby. Most gazetteers do not separate the acreage of the two Allington's but one must assume that the 2,000 acres is roughly equally shared, within that acreage East Allington would have supported a population of around 250 parishioners. The combining of the Allingtons was not a modern phenomenon as in Domesday times the two were jointly recorded shared between Robert & Berengar of Tosny and Robert Malet collectively there totalled 17 ploughs as well as some extensive meadows. |
