The ParishThe parish of West Barkwith is located in central Lincolnshire about 12 miles northeast of the city of Lincoln. West Barkwith is sited on the A157 road which links Wragby with the market town of Louth. There is not much of a settlement to West Barkwith, little more than a scattering of farms and cottages and no centre beyond a group of junctions on the A157. This was always a small parish in an area where these dominate, they are an indication of the density of population in mediaeval times. West Barkwith is sited at around 40 metres above sea level in a largely arable area, there are shallow valleys to north and south where brooks feed southwestwards towards the River Witham. The acreage at 700 acres shows its small size and the area supported just over 100 parishioners. In Domesday times the area was divided between the Archbishop of York and Erneis de Buron and supported a mere 4 ploughs. |
