The ParishThe parish of West Torrington lies in the northern portion of Central Lincolnshire about 5 miles southeast of the market town of Market Rasen. West Torrington is a small village gathered around a junction of lanes about a mile north of the A157 road which connects the large village of Wragby with the market town of Louth. This is fairly flat agricultural country dominated by cereals, oil seed and beet grown in large open fields under big Lincolnshire skies. There is little to West Torrington, a scatter of cottages around its main junction plus farms over the adjacent area. West Torrington sits on a low ridge of land between two small streams, these flow westwards to eventually join the Barling Eau at Langworth before flowing via the River Witham to the North Sea. West Torrington is sited at around 30 metres above the sea and there are few contours hereabouts, although land rises gently towards the Wolds which lie a few miles to the east. West Torrington parish was small and typical of this part of Lincolnshire at around 1,00 acres, it would have supported a population of just under 150 parishioners. In Domesday times West Torrington was reported included within its eastern neighbour where the joint parishes were held by 4 landowners, the joint parishes held just 3 ploughs and a small meadow. |
