The ParishThe parish of Burgh le March lies in eastern Lincolnshire not too far from its North Sea coastline. Burgh le Marsh is located roughly 4 miles inland and west of the coastal resort of Skegness and sits on the former route of the A158 road which connects Skegness with Horncastle, that road now bypassing the village to its north. Burgh le Marsh is a large and compact village, almost a small market town in size, it did once have the right to stage fairs biannually but has never grown fully into that market role. As its qualifier suggests it sits within the much man-influenced marshes of Lincolnshire's eastern coastal plain, the slightly higher ground on which it sits having long been a route-way, the Roman Road heading inland from the crossing of The Wash passes along this shallow raised ridge. The largely reclaimed landscape was used primarily for pastoral farming at the time of this transcript but nowadays is firmly part of Lincolnshire's extensive arable farming regime. The Catchwater Drain and other man-made channels funnel water southeastwards toward the River Deeping for a short journey to the North Sea arriving at Gibraltar Point. Burgh le Marsh is sited at just 10 metres above the sea with most land close by being at or below that level, the exception is the ridge headed northwestwards where land gradually rises to 61 metres at Candlesby Hill. Parishes incorporating reclaimed land are often larger than the usual Lincolnshire parish, covering just over 4,200 acres Burgh le Marsh was one of these; its population was also large being close to 1,100 parishioners. In Domesday times Burgh le Marsh was also a substantial settlement, its population sufficient to be amongst the largest 20% of settlements recorded in that tome, the assets, however, recorded spread across 4 landholders are more meagre with just 12 ploughs recorded along with the extensive coastal meadows. |
