The ParishThe parish of Grainsby lies in northeastern Lincolnshire about 5 miles inland from its North Sea Coast. Grainsby is located about 7 miles of the port of Grimsby just west of the A16 road which connects it to the market town of Louth. Grainsby is a very small settlement, just a scatter of cottages and farms along a lane which heads towards the Wolds from the A16. Grainsby is located in prime agricultural land, here largely of cereals, where the edge of the chalky Wolds emerges onto the coastal plain. This is typical Lincolnshire with big skies and large fields. Although Grainsby is sited at just 15 metres above sea level the land rises to the west and within a mile the higher land of the Wolds begins, rising to almost 100 metres in places. The drainage, as would be expected, is heading eastwards as a tributary of the Waithe Beck which reaches the North Sea at Tetney Marshes. Grainsby parish is small at just over 1,100 acres and supported barely 100 parishioners. In Domesday times the land was held by one Wimund and supported 5 ploughs in addition to some meadow. |
