The ParishThe parish of Tetney lies in northeastern Lincolnshire, indeed it forms part of Lincolnshire's eastern North Sea coastline. Tetney is located about 6 miles southeast of the port of Grimsby on the winding A1031 road which forms the main coastal route in this part of the county. Tetney is a large an compact village built along the main road and a parallel north/south running lane, the space between being filled with properties. Tetney lies at the western end of its parish which contains extensive coastal marshes and grazing pastures. An important trade which had largely died out by the end of this transcript was the weaving business which would have occupied those not working the land for both arable and pastoral farming. The land is very low lying and most drainage has been modified by the hand of man; however, through the south of the parish runs the course of the Waithe Beck which is heading eastwards to join the North Sea. Tetney is sited at a mere 5 metres above the sea and there is scarcely a contour for miles. As a result of the extensive reclaimed land to the east of the village the parish was a large one for northern Lincolnshire, covering over 5,200 acres it would have supported around 800 parishioners. In Domesday times tetney was held by one Ivo Tallboys and supported 12 ploughs as well as a mill and an impressive 13 salthouses. |
