The ParishThe parish of Snarford lies in the northwestern portion of central Lincolnshire. Snarford is located about 7 miles southwest of the market town of Market Rasen. There is very little to Snarford today, just a farmhouse and church alongside a narrow lane which leads northwards from the A46 road which connects Lincoln with Market Rasen, the former village site lies to the northwest of this lane but has been leveled. This is a very depopulated area, the parish consists almost entirely of arable fields, wide and open under huge skies. What little drainage there is is man modified but heading southwards to become the Barlings Eau, a tributary of the Witham and heading for the North Sea through Boston. Snarford is sited at just 15 metres above sea level and the land height varies little for some distance. By the standards of even this area of Lincolnshire Snarford covered a small area, about half the size of a "normal" parish for the area and it supported barely 70 parishioners. In Domesday times the land was shared three ways, the main landholder being the Bishop of Durham. The parish supported 4 ploughs and had some meadows. |
