The ParishThe parish of Stickney lies in eastern Lincolnshire about 8 miles north of the port & market town of Boston. Stickney is a large and sprawling village sited on the A16 road which connects Boston with Spilsby and on to Louth. Stickney sits in an area of the county heavily influenced by the drainage activities of man, sitting on a sliver of land between the West Fen Catchwater Drain and its eastern counterpart. Here on only slightly elevated land a straggle of a village has arisen following the route of the A16 over a distance of well over a mile, the main centre of population being grouped around mill, inn and the main staggered crossroads. At the time of this transcript Stickney would have had a mixed farming economy almost equally divided between arable, on the drier parts of the parish, and pastoral farming, on the extensive man-created pasturelands. Most of the man-made drains in the parish are heading southwards towards Boston and the River Witham and thence into the North Sea. Stickney is sited between sea level and just 10 metres above the same, the land about is at or close to sea level for many a mile making for vast skies and huge fields. Stickney parish is of a fairly typical size for this area, covering around 2,000 acres it would have supported a population of almost 900 parishioners. In Domesday times Stickney was a relatively small place, held by Ivo Tallboys it could offer just 3 ploughs and a meadow. |
