The ParishThe parish of Tathwell lies in eastern central Lincolnshire about 4 miles south of the market town of Louth. Tathwell is a small and compact village lying about a mile west of the A16 road which connects Louth with Boston. Tathwell would have largely been an agricultural community at the time of this transcript and little has changed today, large cereal fields surround the village in all directions. Tathwell is drained by northwards by a small brook which meets others at Louth, from here manmade drainage takes over to channel across the coastal plains to the North Sea through Tetney Haven. Tathwell is sited at around 60 metres above the sea and sits on the eastern edges of the Lincolnshire Wolds, locally the land rises westwards onto the Wolds to reach local heights of almost 150 metres. Tathwell parish was one of the larger for its area, this part of Lincolnshire has many tiny parishes but Tathwell covered almost 4,400 acres and would have supported a population of around 350 parishioners. In Domesday times Tathwell was shared between Earl Hugh of Chester & one Robert a bursar, the parish could offer 11 ploughs, meadows and woodland and 3 mills, a prosperous small settlement indeed. |
