The ParishThe parish of Woodhall lies in central Lincolnshire about 3 miles southwest of the market town of Horncastle. Woodhall, now designated Old Woodhall on modern Ordnance Survey maps sits 2 miles west of the B1191 road which connects Horncastle with the Victorian Spa town of Woodhall Spa. There is very little indeed to Woodhall, although the parish included Woodhall Spa within its area, this was a spa town created for the mineral waters found within the area, the old site of Woodhall has barely any inhabitants today. There are a couple of farms and some medieval earthworks but little else but the ubiquitous cereal fields of this area. Arable agriculture is and was the dominant economic force in this part of the world and almost all parish acreage would have been set to the plough. Woodhall is drained westwards the short distance to the nearby River Witham by small streams and field drains, the Witham makes its way to the North Sea through the port of Boston. Woodhall is sited at around 20 metres above the sea in very gentle terrain, a slight slope rises northeastwards to top 59 metres at Langton Hill on the outskirts of Horncastle. Sitting at just under 1,900 acres Woodhall was a typical size for a Lincolnshire parish, it would have held near to 300 parishioners but far fewer outside of the Spa today. Woodhall is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book. |
