The ParishThe parish of Llanvihangel Tor y Mynydd lies in eastern Monmouthshire about 6 miles northeast of the small market town of Usk. Llanvihangel Tor y Mynydd sits roughly 1 mile west of the B4293 which connects Chepstow with Monmouth on the western side of the River Wye which forms the border with neighbouring Gloucestershire and England. Llanvihangel Tor y Mynydd is a tiny place barely even registering as a hamlet, a scatter of farms and cottages either side of a lane running westwards from the B4293, its most prominent landmark being the Star Inn which gives its name to the hill. Like many parishes in rural Monmouthshire, the local economy would have been dominated by pastoral farming on the rich soils sitting over the Old Red Sandstone that shows so predominantly in the local buildings. Llanvihangel Tor y Mynydd is drained by small tributaries of the Pill Brook which drains westwards into the nearby River Usk, turning south and reaching the outer Bristol Channel through the port of Newport. Llanvihangel Tor y Mynydd sits on something of a ridge at 110 metres and within rolling countryside that reaches to just over 230 metres within nearby Trelleck parish. Rural Monmouthshire parishes are typically small in extent and Llanvihangel Tor y Mynydd was one of those, covering just under 1,100 acres it would have supported around 200 parishioners. Like most of Wales Llanvihangel Tor y Mynydd is not mentioned in Domesday Book which is scanty in its coverage west of the Wye. |
