The ParishThe parish of Machen lies in the extreme west of Monmouthshire, it was unusual in having parts of its area within two counties, the major portion in Monmouthshire and a smaller portion within Glamorgan. As such it straddles as well forms part of the border with neighbouring Glamorgan. Machen is situated about 5 miles northwest of the port of Newport and is a community with several centres of population, the largest being Machen whilst the church is 2 miles closer to Newport in Lower Machen. The parish sits astride the A468 road which connects Newport with the Glamorgan industrial town of Caerphilly. Whilst the economy of the area was underpinned by pastoral farming, the parish also held coal, ironstone, tin & substantial limestone quarries as well as a woollen factory giving a varied economy. Today Machen has lost its heavy industry and is again fairly rural in nature. Machen sits on the northern banks of the Rhymney which drains the parish southwards to meet the Bristol Channel through the city of Cardiff. Machen is sited at around 50 metres above the sea but land rises markedly to local heights of over 360 metres on Mynydd Machen just a couple of miles north in deeply incised countryside. Machen parish was large as befits a largely upland parish, covering almost 3,200 acres it supported a population of around 1,350 parishioners. In common with much of this area there is no mention of Machen in Domesday Book which did not cover this area. |
