The ParishThe parish of Risca lies in western Monmouthshire close to its border with neighbouring Glamorgan. Risca is located about 6 miles northwest of the port of Newport in the lower valley of the Ebbw River. Risca is sited on the B4591 road which links Newport with Newbridge, this was formerly the A467 which thankfully now bypasses to the south of the village. Until the indutrailisation of the Victorian Age Risca was a small rural farming settlement making its living largely from pastoral farming. With the opening of mines and associated heavy industry the parish population grew exponentially spawning the outer villages of Pontymister and Crosskeys. Much of this growth happened in the period immediately after this transcript period so what you see is the records of a much smaller community. At Risca the River Ebbw is not so deeply incised as further north in its course, Risca is sited at around 60 metres above sea level with hills to east and west rising to 360 metres on Mynydd Machen. The Ebbw is flowing southeastwards and reaches the Bristol Channel just west of Newport. Risca parish was typical of the size of lowland Monmouthshire parishes but still by the end of this transcript period supported over 1,000 parishioners (it would have grown from around 300 at the start). Like most of Wales Risca is not mentioned in Domesday Book. |
