The ParishThe parish of Blofield lies in eastern Norfolk roughly 7 miles east of the city of Norwich. Blofield once sat on the busy A47 road which crosses the county from King's Lynn via Norwich to Great Yarmouth, thankfully that busy road now bypasses the village to the north and the village's main street is much quieter for it. AT the time of this transcript Blofield was a large village, almost small market town in size; today Blofield has got bigger still as a centre for commuter development with easy access to the nearby city. Like most Norfolk parishes the economy would have been underpinned by arable farming and like many comunities this would have been supplemented by artisanal weaving. Modern developments have come close to Blofield, the Norwich to Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft railway lines passing through neighbouring Brundall and, of course, the busy dual-carriageway of the A47 speeding motorists and trade past the village. Blofield sits just out of the valley of the nearby River Yare and a selection of streams and field drains drain into that river, heading eastwards to reach the nearby North Sea through the port of Great Yarmouth. Blofield is sited at just 20 metres above the sea in fairly flat terrain where land continues to rise northwards, away from the river valley, reaching barely 30 metres within a couple of miles. Blofield parish was slightly larger than most in Norfolk's Broadland, covering just under 2,300 acres it would have supported a population of close to 1,100 parishioners. In Domesday times Blofield was also a middling sized place, held by Bishop William of Thetford it could offer 11 ploughs together with the usual meadows and woodland. |
