The ParishThe parish of Coston is located in Central Norfolk about 4 miles northwest of the market town of Wymondham. Coston is little more than a hamlet, a scattering of farms and cottages with no defined village to speak of. Coston lies about a mile east of the B1135 road which connects Wymondham with East Dereham, it sits on the southern banks of the infant River Yare. The area around Coston is largely arable in nature although there are small water meadows along the river which support pastures. The River Yare drains the parish eastwards to reach the North Sea through the port of Great Yarmouth. Coston is sited at around 30 metres above the sea and the surrounding landscape is gently undulating to around 50 metres or so. Even by the standards of Norfolk, a county with many small parishes, Coston parish is tiny, it covered just under 350 acres and supported fewer than 50 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Coston in Domesday Book. |
