Coston St Michael

The Parish

The parish of Coston is located in Central Norfolk about 4 miles northwest of the market town of Wymondham. Coston is little more than a hamlet, a scattering of farms and cottages with no defined village to speak of. Coston lies about a mile east of the B1135 road which connects Wymondham with East Dereham, it sits on the southern banks of the infant River Yare. The area around Coston is largely arable in nature although there are small water meadows along the river which support pastures. The River Yare drains the parish eastwards to reach the North Sea through the port of Great Yarmouth. Coston is sited at around 30 metres above the sea and the surrounding landscape is gently undulating to around 50 metres or so. Even by the standards of Norfolk, a county with many small parishes, Coston parish is tiny, it covered just under 350 acres and supported fewer than 50 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Coston in Domesday Book.

The Church

St Michael's church sits on the western side of Church Lane, running southwards from the notional centre of Coston. The church is no longer used for worship but is still accessible to the public. The church is surprisingly complete and largely of the 13th century, an early date for a Norfolk church. Showing the normal design of nave, chancel & western tower the church has not been over-restored like many of its contemporaries in the county. The building is rather screened from its lane and entry is by a curious grassy pathway which is all too easily passed without care. Once inside the churchyard there are few obstructions to photography.
