The ParishThe parish of Runhall lies in central Norfolk roughly 5 miles northwest of the market town of Wymondham. Runhall sits just under 2 miles east of the B1135 road which connects Wymondham with East Dereham. Runhall is a small and rather dispersed settlement with no real village centre merely a scatter of farms and cottages across its small acreage. Runhall sits on the northern banks of the upper River Yare, the infant river gives the parish some water-meadows for pasturage which would have varied the farming regime from the normal arable which otherwise dominates the parish. Modern developments did come to the parish, a railway branch line from Wymondham through East Dereham came but nowadays is a heritage line as the Mid-Norfolk Line, albeit with some freight and plans to return the line to the network. The Yare drains the parish eastwards, passing by the city of Norwich to reach the North Sea through the port of Great Yarmouth. Runhall is sited around 40 metres above the sea in fairly gentle terrain where local heights rarely rise much above 60 metres. The area is characterised by numerous small parishes, Runhall being one of many, covering barely 850 acres it would have supported a population of close to 250 parishioners. In Domesday time Runhall was an equally small place, held by Count Alan of Brittany with just 3 ploughs meanwhile King William retained control of the mill. |
