The ParishThe parish of Gayton lies in western Norfolk about 7 miles east of the port of King's Lynn. The village sits at a crossroads of the B1145 (running east to west) with the B1153 (running north to south). Most of the village is sited on or south of the B1145 as it heads westwards from the crossroads or on and west of the B1153 as it heads north. Gayton is a substantial village and sits in a large parish of over 3000 acres and supporting a historical population of almost 800 parishioners. The area of Norfolk is largely agricultural, and area of big cereal fields and consequent big skies. Gayton sits on the edge of the narrow plain running down to the Wash coast, the village is about 20 metres above sea level but higher land rises to the east. Gayton has a long history, it merits no fewer than 4 mentions in Domesday book where it was spread over many landowners but clearly was a prosperous settlement holding many ploughs. |
