The ParishThe parish of Wighton lies in northern Norfolk quite close to its northern North Sea coast. Wighton is located about 3 miles southeast of the port of Wells-next-the-Sea. Wighton is a small and linear village located about 2 miles south of the A149 road which forms Norfolk's northern coastal road. Wighton is largely built on a road which runs southeastwards from the narrow unnumbered road from Wells to the Walsinghams. The area would almost totally have been used for arable farming at the time of this transcript, although there was a bone-mill in the village for producing fertiliser from animal bone. A popular visitor attraction today is the steam railway of the Wells & Walsingham Light Railway which has a halt and passes through the parish, formerly a commercial line for transporting agricultural produce to the port of Wells it is now a heritage line. The River Stiffkey runs through the village and drains northeastwards to reach the North Sea. Wighton is sited at between 10 & 20 metres above the sea, the area is gently rolling with local heights up to almost 70 metres on Bunker's Hill a couple of miles to the west. Wighton parish was of a typical size for a parish in northern Norfolk, it covered just short of 3,000 acres and would have supported a population of around 550 parishioners. In Domesday time Wighton was held directly by the King, himself, it could offer 12 ploughs as well as meadows & woodland and possessed 2 mills. |
