The ParishBainton is a chapelry of Ufford parish but was also responsible for conducting marriages through the period of this transcript. Bainton is located in the extreme northeast of Northamptonshire, indeed it forms part of the border with neighbouring Lincolnshire. Bainton sits about 4 miles east of the Lincolnshire market town of Stamford, a small and compact village sitting on the B1443 road which connects Stamford with the Cambridgeshire village of Thorney. Bainton sits on the southern banks of the River Welland, which here forms the county border. The area is very much at the edge of the great Fenlands stretching to the Wash coast, very fertile soils lead to intensive arable & market gardening activities; Bainton's economy was also boosted by the presence of limestone within the southern part of the parish, albeit of poor quality and used mainly for road stone. The Welland drains eastwards and, much canalised, passes through Spalding to The Wash. Bainton is sited at just 15 metres above sea level and it is only towards its parent parish of Ufford that land rises significantly. The chapelry covered a relatively small area of 1,000 acres and would have supported a population of just over 150 parishioners. There is no mention of Bainton in Domesday Book. |
