The ParishThe parish of Earls Barton lies in south central Northamptonshire, not too far from the borders with both Bedfordshire & Buckinghamshire. Earls Barton is located, in the valley of the River Nene, about 4 miles southeast of the town of Wellingborough and 6 miles east of the county town of Northampton. Earls Barton sits on rising ground on the northern side of the Nene about a mile north of the busy A45 road which runs from Thrapston, south of both Wellingborough & Northampton, through to the M1. Earls Barton is a substantial village, almost a small town in itself. Most buildings sits either side of the B573 road which forms Earls Barton's High Street or along the lanes leading north and south from it. At the time of this transcript the area's economy would have been underpinned by the rich agricultural soil of the Nene valley but there was also some industry in the form of shoe & mat making within the village. The Nene drains the parish eastwards, eventually reaching the North Sea through The Wash. Earls Barton is sited at around 90 metres above the sea and sits on a shelf of land some 50 metres above the Nene, local heights reach little more than this height in gently undulating countryside. Earls Barton parish was fairly typically sized for the county, it covered just over 2,300 acres and would have supported a population of around 1,100 parishioners. In Domesday times Earls Barton was held by one Countess Judith, it could offer 8 ploughs, small meadows and 3 mills. |

1 | 8th September 1754 - 31st January 1793 | Northamptonshire Archives - Reference - 110P/014 | Standard preprinted and self-numbered Marriage register with 4 entries per page | Grade 5 Register - the condition of this register is such that the transcript carries a "health warning" as to the likelihood of being substantially incorrect | The early part of this register is extremely irregular in its completion. In many cases only the signatures of bride & groom are present to identify the parties and in some cases marriages have been omitted because it is unclear who the two parties are and other cases exist where there is no or incomplete date information, in some cases this can be assumed from surrounding entries. It is not until entry No 90 that matters return to some semblance of normality, any entry in the first 89 records should be viewed with the deepest suspicion. |
2 | 12th February 1793 - 31st December 1812 | Northamptonshire Archives - Reference - 110P/015 | Standard preprinted and self-numbered Marriage register with 3 entries per page | Grade 1 Register - Few issues noted and a low likelihood of misreads | None |
3 | 4th January 1813 - 18th May 1837 | Northamptonshire Archives - Reference - 110P/013 | Standard Rose style preprinted and prenumbered Marriage register | Grade 3 Register - there are sufficient quality issues with this register to indicate that some misreads will occur albeit few in number | A short stretch of florid and difficult handwriting leads to a possibility of a few misreads |
