The ParishThe parish of Little Harrowden lies in east central Northamptonshire about 3 miles northwest of the market town of Wellingborough. Little Harrowden (ironically nowadays larger than its near neighbour Great Harrowden) is a mid-sized compact village sitting on the B574, a curious little road that loops out and back from the A509 just to visit Little Harrowden, the A509 connects Wellingborough with Kettering. Little Harrowden was almost totally a farming community with a predominance of arable farming although some pastures were present, much less so today. Little Harrowden is drained eastwards by small tributaries of the nearby River Ise which is soon joined, the latter meets the Nene at Wellingborough and the North Sea through The Wash. Little Harrowden is sited at around 90 metres above the sea in gently rolling rural landscapes, local heights reach to around 120 metres within a few miles. Little Harrowden parish is also curious in shape being elongated on an east to west axis yet narrow from north to south, it covered just over 1,500 acres making it fairly typically sized despite its odd shape and it would have supported a population of around 700 parishioners. Despite St Mary's church having Norman features, see below, there is no mention of Little Harrowden in Domesday Book, it is suspected that it was recorded within neighbouring Orlingbury. |
