The ParishThe parish of Thorpe Mandeville lies in the extreme southwest of Northamptonshire, indeed it forms a small part of the border with neighbouring Oxfordshire. Thorpe Mandeville is situated in rolling north Cotswold countryside about 6 miles northeast of the Oxfordshire market town of Banbury. Thorpe Mandeville is a fairly diffuse settlement built largely along a northward running lane about a mile north of the B4525 road which links Middleton Cheney with Silverstone. The village would have earned its living through a largely pastoral farming regime, although there was additional employment quarrying the local honey-coloured limestone. The parish is drained by a series of small brooks which trend northwestwards to join the River Cherwell and eventually The Thames at Oxford before reaching the North Sea. Thorpe Mandeville is sited at around 170 metres above sea level and sits on a distinct ridge in a rolling landscape dominated by stone walls. By Northamptonshire standards Thorpe Mandeville was a small parish, it covered 900 acres and would have supported a population of around 150 parishioners. In Domesday times Thorpe Mandeville was by one Giles brother of Ansculf and could offer just a paltry 3 ploughs, a small place indeed. |
