& Wales Hardwicke Marriage Index |
The ParishThe parish of St Petrox lies in the extreme south of Pembrokeshire lying just a couple of miles from its southern coastline and such is the indentation of that coastline that the wider parish includes a small stretch of that coast. St Petrox is sited roughly 3 miles south of the port of Pembroke. St Petrox sits on the B4319 road which connects this whole area, from Angle in the west, through to Pembroke. There is very little to St Petrox, no defined village merely a scatter of farms and cottages across the parish. The land is of fertile geology and arable farming formed the mainstay of the economy. Today much of the area is tourist attraction with the nearby Broad Haven beach and adjacent lily ponds a major draw. Despite being close to the drowned river valley of Broad Haven, St Petrox's drainage heads westwards to reach the outer Bristol Channel through Freshwater West. St Petrox is sited at around 80 metres above the sea, something of a local high point where spot heights register a mere 10 metres further rise in places. St Petrox was a relatively small parish of just over 900 acres and this area would have supported less than 100 parishioners. Like most of Wales St Petrox is not mentioned in Domesday Book which did not cover this area. |
